چکیده

We have studied the mechanism of the spontaneous twist of surface orientation observed when cooling down 4-n heptyloxybenzoic and 4-n octyloxybenzoic acids (HOBA and OOBA) in their dimerized nematic phase, above a SiO evaporated dielectric surface. We apply an electric field parallel to the dielectric substrate. When the field is parallel to the high temperature surface projection of the director, we up or down shift the temperature of the twist surface bifurcation, linearly in field. For perpendicular field, of defined sign, we can induce surface transitions from one twisted state to the other one. These observations can be explained by a simple polar model: the order electric polarization close to SiO is almost parallel to the substrate, since the molecular tilt is around the "magic" angle. Surface undulations create an anisotropic surface depolarizing field, which forces the polarization to rotate. We estimate a strong flexoelectric coefficient for 4-n octyloxybenzoic acid e +~ +10~~

Surface induced transitions in the nematic phase of 4-n octyloxybenzoic acid

The heptyl-, octyland nonyl-benzoic acids present dimerized nematic and smectic C liquid-crystal phases. Using polarized optical microscopy and X-ray scatterig, we have measured the orientational and positional order close to the surface of the nematic single-crystal, oriented between SiO evaporation-coated glass plates. Decreasing the temperature, we observe a spontaneous twist and bifurcation...

[Article] Transition Bars and Related Honeycomb and Fingerprint Textures Exhibited by 12OBAC, 16OBAC and a Binary Mixture of Them

By means of the polarized light microscopy, at the transitions between the smectic and nematic phase and between the smectic and the isotropic phase of some liquid crystals, we can observe the rising of transition bars and the presence of undulations in them. We can also see “honeycomb” and “fingerprint” textures as the evolution of the transition bars. Here, we will show some of these textures...

Investigation into the temperature dependence of isotropic- nematic phase transition of Gay- Berne liquid crystals

Density functional approach was used to study the isotropic- nematic (I-N) transition and calculate the values of freezing parameters of the Gay- Berne liquid crystal model. New direct and pair correlation functions of a molecular fluid with Gay- Berne pair potential were used. These new functions were used in density functional theory as input to calculate the isotropic- nematic transition den...

The Weak Shear Phase Diagram for Nematic Polymers

We study the weak shear problem of nematic polymers as modeled by the kinetic theory of Doi 4] and Hess 15]. The probability distribution function (pdf) f (m; t) is to be solved for the orientation of rigid molecules with axis of symmetry m 2 S 2 (the sphere) due to the interaction of an excluded-volume potential (with strength proportional to dimensionless concentration N) and an imposed shear...

Search for the nondimerized quantum nematic phase in the spin-1 chain.

Chubukov's proposal concerning the possibility of a nondimerized quantum nematic phase in the ground-state phase diagram of the bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 chain is studied numerically. Our results do not support the existence of this phase, but they rather indicate a direct transition from the ferromagnetic into the dimerized phase.
